 above and below the item, for the simple reason that you must discern between

 Here's another fairly long one, designed to show what it's like when two
 multiline items but up against each other.
 Later in this exercise we'll decrease line spacing between lines of a single
 item, so that different items can be more easily discerned, even if separated
 by less vertical space.
